Free crochet pattern and foto tutorial: sun, sea and... ice cream!

Summer holiday is almost here in the Netherlands; only one day and then the school closes for six weeks! We're so looking forward to these weeks in which a lot of things can be done, but no things must be done! We love the late breakfasts, the trips to the beach after dinner, the warmth of the sun, our flip flops, and... of course... all the extra time we have to crochet!

To celebrate the summer we made this fun and free crochet pattern of a summer sweet ice cream. Easy to make and a perfect project to use up all your scraps of yarn! Thanks to the extended free foto tutorial, this project is suitable for beginners and advanced crocheters.

We wish you lots of fun crocheting ice creams! We would love to see your tasty creations, so feel free to post all your crocheted goodness on our Facebook wall.

MATERIALS
Sraps of yarn in sweet colors (wool, acrylic or cotton) for the scoop of ice cream;
light brown for the cone. Make sure that both yarns (for ice cream and cone) have the same weight

• crochet hook with the right size (depends on the weight of the chosen yarn)
• darning needle • scissors  • glue (use fabric adhesive for cotton yarn,
for acrylic yarn we know from experience that a hobby glue gun works best)

Make the scoop of ice cream.
Start at approximately ± 30 cm (11,8 inches) from
the beginning of the working thread. Later on you will

use this piece of yarn to hang or attach the ice cream.
Ch 2, work 6dc (tr) in second ch from hook.
Ch 3, turn.
Make 1dc (tr) in first stich, then 2dc (tr) in each stitch until end of row. (12dc (tr) made)

Ch 3, DON'T turn your work. Make a ss in the space between the first and second round of dc (tr), see arrow.
Ch 3, make a ss in the other space between the first and
second round of dc (tr), see arrow.
Ch 3, make a ss in the first stich of the previous round
of dc (tr), see arrow.
Ch 3. Make ss around the joining of the first and second loop (see photo's).
Ch 3, make ss around the joining of the second and third loop (see photo's).
Ch 3, make ss in the first stich of the previous round of dc (tr), see photo.
Ch 1. Now you have a semi-circle with 6 loops.
Make around each loop: 5 dc (tr) and 1 ss, starting with first loop made.

Note: when you start working on fourth loop, press the first three loops made downwards.
This will make crocheting in the back loops easier.
Finished crocheting all six loops? Then fasten off...
... and weave in the thread you last worked with.
Transport the beginning thread to the upper middle of the scoop;
this thread can be used to hang or attach the ice cream.

Make the cone (take the light brown yarn):
Row 1: ch 2.
Row 2:
2 sc (dc) in second ch from hook, turn. Total: 2 sc (dc).
Row 3 and 4: ch 1, 2 sc (dc), turn.
Row 5: ch 1, 2 sc (dc) in each stich, turn. Total: 4 sc (dc).
Row 6 and 7: ch 1, 4 sc (dc), turn.
Row 8: ch 1, 2 sc (dc) in first stitch, 1 sc (dc) in each stitch untill second last stitch,
2 sc (dc) in last stitch, turn. Total: 6 sc (dc).

Row 9 en 10: ch 1, 6 sc (dc), turn.
Row 11: ch 1, 2 sc (dc) in first stitch, 1 sc (dc) in each stitch untill second last stitch,
2 sc (dc) in last stitch, turn. Total: 8 sc (dc).

Row 12 en 13: ch 1, 8 sc (dc), turn.
And for all of you who prefer a crochet diagram...
Attach the cone by glueing it between the 'flaps' of the ice cream scoop.
Congratulations, your ice cream is done. Happy summer to everyone!
